Abstract: The present study is an exploratory study of the use of cognitive strategies by the national players of Nepal to enhance performance and its relation to performance self appraisal. The main objectives of the study were to fi nd out the cognitive strategies used by the national players during practice and competitive situation. Gender difference in the use of cognitive strategy was another major objective of the study. The study used a quantitative study design where the data w as collected by using TOPS (Thomas et al., 1999) tool. Semi - structure tool was developed by the researcher with the help of her research guide to get more information on demographic detail and self appraisal. Snow ball and convenient sampling were done for the data collection. The sample size was 51 with 19 female and 32 male athletes. The participants‟ age was in between 18 to 35 years. They were the national players of Nepal who had attended at least two international events. The findings showed that there was a high usage of cognitive strategies during practice than during competition. There was no statistically significant difference in the overall use of the cognitive strategies during practice and competition on the basis of gender. However, while analy zing each cognitive strategy, automaticity was seen to be used significantly more by females during competition than males. The overall cognitive strategies which were used mostly by the participants were goal setting, imagery and activation. It was also f ound that there was a positive correlation between the use of cognitive strategies and performance self appraisal of the participants.
