Abstract: The study was carried out in Bandigaon and Khaliabhata, two villages of Jaipatna block of Kalahandi district, Odisha. The overall objective of this study was t o understand local farmer’s perceptions on climate and variability issues and to document the adopting coping strategies in agricultural sector. Both secondary and primary data were used. Primary data were obtained using different Participatory Research Approaches including, focus group discussions and household questionnaires. In each village, a sample size of 13 % of all households was interviewed. Findings showed that local people perceived changes in rainfall and temperature. The variability have affected the crops, particularly focused on the rice cultivation in a number of ways resulting in reduced production and productivity and increased the household’s vulnerability. Empirical analysis of rain fall suggest increasing rainfall trend bet ween 1999 to 2014 whereas mean maximum and minimum showed high variation from the average and also similar trends observed in case of temperature pattern between 1996 to 2001. The different categories of farmers namely the marginal, small, semi-medium, medium and big, these are differently vulnerable to climate variability. The study concluded that, the knowledge on coping and adaptation that farmer has come out of the Climate Variability is strongly linked with households vulnerability and It should form a foundation for designing agricultural innovation systems to deal with impacts of climate variability
