Abstract: Ecotourism plays as a tool of biodiversity conservation and socio-economic development of local communities. Its success depends on proper planning, and effectiveness of policies and stakeholders involved in its implementation. Most of the ecotourism has been practiced in Protected Areas around the globe. People residing around the Protected Areas, with restriction in accessing resources especially in developing nation live in poverty and unstable economy. However, through ecotourism approach, their economic livelihood can be improved and strengthened by harnessing and conserving the rich biodiversity. Effective implementation of the concept of ecotourism can have an enormous impact on the lives of the local communities and those who depend on natural resources for their livelihood. The study finds that the ecotourism activities in the Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary have not delivered much positive results. The sanctuary has the potential to develop successful tourism activities. This can be achieved by the involvement of local communities through local level institutions. Proper rules and regulation and effective policy needs to be put into practice to achieve ecotourism goals.
