|Abstract:||As more and more women move into the workforce, whether out of choice or financial necessity, the third role of "working professional" is added to the two traditional'''wife'' and "mother" roles. Working women is possibly one of the most significant sociological changes that has taken place in this country in recent history. It is a phenomenon that is altering the very foundation upon which traditional norms and customs rest and will have a tremendous impact on the larger society and these women themselves. The effect that professional lives has on the lifestyle and personal choices that Indian women make forms the basis of this research study. What are the factors that would predispose a woman to choose a career and how would these factors effect the decisions that she makes in the other spheres of her life" Are there any common experiences or events that are likely to influence a woman o choose certain roles over others" . Factors that were found to not impact on the career vs. family choice included occupation, religion and age. The limitations of this study include the small size of population, sensitive nature of research topic, difficulty in identifying cases, hence the small sample size and single source of data. There were also locational constraints present. This research study has been successful in building a base of knowledge about the factors that influence the decisions that women make in their career and life choices in the Indian context. It has taken place in an area where not much study has been done So far and there is tremendous scope for further more detailed study, using this as a foundation.|
