Abstract: A study was conducted by the author in two integrated steel plants in India, one operating in the private sector and the other being a publIc sector unit WJ1h the objective of finding out if the determinants of industrial relations and trade union stability account for the difference in the public sector and private sector and therefore are responsible for the varying levels of performance between the two companies. To control the response bias and to increase the reliability of the data a structured pattern of questions were also used for three different segments of the employee population i. e. managers, workers and workers' representatives, during the descriptive survey research. Statistical tests were employed for the data analysis using SPSS.
